Banjo. It always had to be Banjo. Because when I think of video games and Christmas, I think of the Nintendo 64. And when I think of the Nintendo 64, by God I think of Banjo-Kazooie.
Now this is weeeeird. I’d already planned on posting today’s track sometime during our little calendar here but ANC (wisely) suggested I save it for the solstice which was just too great a call to pass up. And strangely enough when peeking into the mailbox this afternoon, I was greeted with a package from Nintendo. My platinum Club Nintendo membership arrived and as it shakes out, is the soundtrack to the very game featured below!

We’re still five days away from Christmas but I’m going for it. This track is the second to make our calendar from Diddy Kong Racing and also just happens to be my favorite Christmasy video game music of all time. If you haven’t guessed which theme it is by now, well then what are you waiting for?
What kind of 2013 musical calendar would fail to include a track from Nintendo’s biggest release of the season? Almost this one! But it recently occurred to me that Super Mario 3D World had yet to be represented and today’s clip remedies that!
Something we here at Nintendorks.net were really worried about when deciding which tracks to include in this calendar was forgetting any iconic holiday video game music that was completely obvious. It would have tortured us forever (or at least until next year when we don’t do this again). Today’s pick is one that could have easily slipped through the tracks and I’m so glad it did not.
You’re welcome, Grandma.

Allow me to present you with everything I know about the Ice Climbers in 50 words or less:
They and their stages are annoying as hell in Super Smash Bros. Melee, the original NES game is featured on this badass poster I still have hanging up someplace in my room that I won’t tell you where it is and the following track fits in with our playlist fairly well.
Like many men of my generation, there are still a few scars from the great 16-bit wars of the early to mid 90’s that I’m carrying around. It should be fairly clear where my loyalty fell when sides were chosen between the SNES and Genesis, yet today’s selection actually comes from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The third installment in a series that I’ve never been even remotely interested in. But our old buddy Boris Stoke suggested this theme because he likes it and we like Boris Stoke so it is included dammit!

Because today’s selection is a bit of a stretch but I think actually works quite nicely playing in the background during a dark winter evening. Go ahead and have a listen.
If you dare.
