An unlikely hero

In a sleepy hamlet, a young lad heads out on his village’s coming of age ceremony. Following a miraculous series of events, he discovers that he is the Luminary, the reincarnation of a legendary hero who saved the world eons ago.

To fulfil his destiny, he travels to the largest kingdom to learn more about what it means to be the Luminary. However, disaster strikes as he is branded as the “Darkspawn” by the king and must make a hasty retreat, with the kingdom’s forces in hot pursuit.

Now on the run, our intrepid adventurer must travel across the vast land of Erdrea, bringing together a group of comrades all united by their belief in the Luminary. Hounded at every turn by the king’s knights and other villains, it’s up to you to help our brave hero set things right!

On your journey across Erdrea, you’ll cross entire continents, traverse vast oceans and explore grand cities as you uncover more about your destiny as the legendary hero. From the calming hot springs of Hotto to the desert sands of Gallopolis, you’ve got plenty of places to go and people to meet!

Cobblestone

This quaint little village is the home to our hero. As part of its coming of age ceremony, villagers must climb the nearby Cobblestone Tor.

Heliodor

Located on the Emerald Coast, the city of Heliodor acts the first stop on the Luminary’s journey.

Hotto

Situated in the foothills of Mount Huji, this village is famous for its relaxing hot springs.

Gallopolis

Home to the Sand National, this desert city is a favourite for fans of horse racing.

Gondolia

The largest port in Erdrea, Gondolia attracts merchants from all over the world.

Time to head out into the big wide world!

As part of the Luminary’s quest, you and your party will roam across the expansive overworld, battling baddies of all shapes and size, gaining experience points, money and other goodies as your band of adventurers grows in strength. Erdrea’s a big old place but with the help of your trusty steed along with brand new mounts like dragons and giant sabrecats, you’ll be at your destination in no time!

Out on the town

With your spoils, visit towns and cities to stock up on supplies, the shiniest armour and fiercest weapons for the battles ahead, but that’s not all!

Chat to the locals to obtain side-quests that’ll take you off the beaten track, let off some steam at the races or head to the local inn for a good night’s kip to get you rested and ready for the road ahead.

Taking turns

When you’re ready, make contact with an enemy on the overworld to begin a battle. Each combatant takes turns attacking, giving you time to think about each action your party members should perform – whether it’s casting a spell, striking with your weapon or using an ability to exploit a monster’s weakness.

Tactical genius

Along with choosing the right attack for the job, strategically-minded players can set specific tactics for each character. From having them go on the offensive to healing if someone’s health gets too low, develop the strategy that’s right for you.

On top of setting unique combat tactics, you can further tweak the dials to really customise your combat experience. From upping the battle speed to swapping between a dynamic or classic battle camera, battle across the world of Erdrea however you like!

Some pep in your step

Get attacked a lot or undergo certain trials and tribulations and a party member will get pepped up! In this powered-up state, characters gain a hefty stat boost and can combine forces with another pepped up ally to unleash a show-stopping pep power.

Be careful though – enemies can get pepped up too and unleash their own devastating attacks!

Character building

As they gain experience and level up, the Luminary and his merry band will earn skill points – which are used to unlock new abilities and spells, as well improve their attributes via the Character Builder. Unlock panels on the Character Builder and surrounding ones become available, further expanding your options.

Forging ahead

Craft your own weapons, armour and accessories anywhere you’d like with the Fun-Size Forge! Find recipes scattered around Erdrea, collect materials either on the overworld or by defeating enemies, and create new gear. You can even rework your current kit to make it that bit stronger!

Line your blows up just right while smithing and you’ll produce a piece that even the finest craftsman would be proud of.

Making camp

While out in the field, stop off at a campsite to recover your health and magic for the low, low price of absolutely free! Each campsite has a sacred statue where you can save your progress, with some having a merchant where you can stock up on supplies.

Once rested, call upon your horse by ringing the nearby summoning bell and ride off to your next objective. If you wish to return to a campsite you’ve previously stayed at, or any town you've visited, cast the Zoom spell and you’ll be there in two shakes of a platypunk’s tail!

For those fearless heroes looking for a truly diabolical challenge, undertake a Draconian Quest when starting your next adventure. When activated, grapple with unique obstacles like not being able to buy items from shops, to all enemies being super strong, to even the people of Erdrea telling you porkies while talking to you!

For those looking for a truly retro DRAGON QUEST experience, try out 2D Mode! Available as soon as you start your adventure, selecting 2D Mode turns the entirety of DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition into a 16-bit RPG, complete with beautiful pixel art and random encounters.

You can change between 2D and 3D Mode during your adventure by visiting a nearby church or sacred statue.

Nostalgia trip

During your adventure, you’ll encounter the Tockles, mischievous little sprites who watch over the timelines of DRAGON QUEST games past and present – and they need your help!

To help them restore the flow of time, find Tockles dotted around Erdrea and learn the “pastwords” they hold. With these magic words, travel back to these familiar worlds rendered in glorious 16-bit and fix any mistakes in the timestream. Expect to encounter tough foes and legendary loot!

Filling in the gaps in the original game’s story, DRAGON QUEST XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition features new character-specific side stories. These interludes have you playing as members of the Luminary's party and helping them on their own individual adventures.
