Donkey Kong Country was a massive sales hit for the SNES toward the end of that system’s lifespan and this was largely thanks to those newfangled (and at the time, revolutionary) pre-rendered graphics. But visuals weren’t the only thing the game had going for it as the lush, atmospheric soundtrack was just as impressive. Today’s musical selection isn’t the first to pop into most people’s minds when talking about DKC (that honor probably goes to “Aquatic Ambience“) but it fits in quite nicely with what we’re trying to do here with this advent calendar thingie so in it goes!

I’m pretty sure I’ve gone on record at some point stating that the original F-Zero has one of the best soundtracks of the 16-bit era and quite possibly the best of that initial crop of software for the SNES. If not, this is me going on record stating that F-Zero has one of the best […]
I could sit here and type out all kinds of complaints that I’ve always had with Mario Kart 64 but in the spirit of the season, I’ll just have to keep my trap shut now won’t I. This is the most wonderful time of year and we will focus on happy things and by God, […]
SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY! That has nothing really to do with today’s track. I just felt like saying it, since it’s Sunday. Anyway: Wario Land: Shake It! – Freezing Fields A bright, upbeat track from Good-Feel’s somewhat under-appreciated Wii platformer. Perfect for a sunny December day leading up to Christmas, with proper application of sleigh bells […]
Dammit, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime: Corruption. Why can’t you two be more like the first Metroid Prime? Y’know, a perfect blend of action/atmosphere and possibly the best example of first person platforming ever. Today’s musical selection is indeed pulled from that initial installment and falls more into the “Wintery” category than a […]
Heyo, I’m taking over today on this Christmas business for the first time. In a startling move, today’s selection does NOT come from a snowy, icy level. In fact, having just played this game recently, I don’t recall there being an ice level of any sort, though there was ice present in some fashion. Anyway […]
Hey kids, WHO LIKES POKEMANZ? To be honest, outside of Pinball and Snap I haven’t played anything Pokemon related since the Gold/Silver days. And I really only bought into the craze of the main series back then because that real-time clock sounded badass. This was well over ten years ago now yet here we are: […]
There’s a good chance more than a couple of clips from Diddy Kong Racing for Ye Olde N64 will pop up this month and here we are with the first. In their heyday, Rare were absolute geeks when it came to Christmas, often packing their games with all sorts of nods to the holiday (Just […]
